4 Tips for a Luxury Kitchen from Trulia

When you are considering a kitchen remodel, you may be thinking of what you would like in your fabulous new space. It’s always a good idea, though, to factor in what will add the most value or return on investment to your home—especially if you are thinking of pulling out all the stops and going luxury. Trulia, a powerhouse online source for buying and selling homes, recently shared 4 tips to consider when you are renovating to create a luxury kitchen. We’ve summed them up below:

St. Charles

1. Function. Even if it’s luxurious, it has to work well. That means good design that keeps in mind flow, and features both you and others will love. Trulia lists some top features buyers seem to love in a luxury kitchen: open floor plans, oversized center islands (or even two islands!), a butler’s pantry, lots of prep space, and a second dishwasher or even refrigerator if entertainment is key.

2. Both trendy and timeless. You want the permanent pieces to be timeless—cabinets, countertops, and appliances. Choose high quality cabinets in rich woods with neutral tones or white. Choose natural stone, granite, or marble countertops on a center island, and add the luxury feature of wrapped countertop edges for a “waterfall” effect. And choose stainless steel, high quality appliances. Buyers who want luxury love appliances that are functional showpieces—think under-counter refrigeration, glass front refrigerators, and separate wine storage. Then you can add the trendy in pieces that can be changed out using decor that offers unique art and pops of color.

3. Luxury doesn’t equal large. A luxury kitchen doesn’t have to be huge—it all just depends on good design. If you have a small kitchen, you can go luxury in the details and function. Smaller appliances will free up space, and higher end countertops and cabinets can create the luxury. They suggest inviting lighting and warm and cold textures that break up the room.

4. ROI. Consider the style of your house to keep things consistent, and also consider your home’s total value. That said, the kitchen seems to be the go-to deal breaker more than any room in the house. So go ahead and remodel so you can enjoy it, and then pass it on to your future homebuyer who will pay more for a home with such a fabulous kitchen!
