One of the most exciting parts of remodeling a kitchen is picking out a feature that makes perfect sense, is functional, and helps to keep you organized. Modern kitchens offer so many features that make people with older layouts and designs say, “Aha! That’s how it is supposed to be done!”
Seigle’s Designers are constantly Cooking Up Cabinet Ideas—that’s because they know functional, creative kitchen design that works for our customers. Sometimes our designers love what is interesting or quirky—perfectly suited for the client’s wishes. And sometimes they love features that are universally loved—must-haves that are needed in every new kitchen. Today, designer Kay Himmelman wanted to feature her favorite option when it works: the Kitchen Island.
“Islands are it—if a kitchen has room, it’s the way to go,” said Kay. She has been recommending this feature for 28 years. “An island can eliminate traffic congestion, as it creates two paths to get where you are going. It adds storage and countertop in a central location, and it adds more interest as a focal point.”
As for special features to make an island even more enticing, the options for an island are limitless. “You can add different levels to accommodate counter and eating heights, you can add decorative backs, doors, sides, and beaded panels. And for function, you can create the perfect island for your needs: add open bookshelves, a veggie sink, lots of drawers, or even a freezer or microwave drawer,” said Kay.
