What’s Your Style? A Close Look at Modern Kitchens

When you are considering remodeling your kitchen, you likely have a style in mind—even if you don’t know what the style is called. Kitchens can range from traditional to industrial to farmhouse to contemporary—and some designers parse even closer and differentiate between rustic farmhouse and modern. Whatever you call it, your kitchen will end up with a style, and the cabinetry, countertop material, colors, and finishes all contribute. A well-designed kitchen considers how all of these elements work together—the better they work into a coordinated style, the more likely your new kitchen is to “wow.”

We wanted to take a closer look at the various trending styles, and help you give a name to your vision. Not only will this help you end up with the kitchen you are dreaming of, but it will help you get there faster. Knowing your desired style narrows your choices, making the process of selections far less overwhelming. This way, when you are deciding on cabinets, styles, finishes, and more, your search can be limited to elements that will line up with the kitchen of your dreams.

Today, we will take a look at what makes a kitchen “Modern.”

What is Modern?

Modern design is associated with the mid-Century (1950s). It is very similar to contemporary and often the two are mistaken for each other. Both styles focus on crisp, clean lines and minimalism. With Modern design, though, you will see more earthtones, wood, and colorful elements, as well as more curves. Modern design focuses on horizontal elements, but allows these earthtones and textures to add interest.

What will you see in modern kitchens?

  • Crisp, clean lines.
  • Earthy hues, with elements of wood and nature in decor.
  • An open space feel and flow.

What words describe a modern kitchen?

  • Minimalist
  • Sleek
  • Sophisticated

What goes with a modern kitchen?

Modern kitchen design will have a lot of sleek, horizontal lines. Cabinets in modern kitchens will often be frameless, with simple non-ornamented hardware. Often, elements of the texture of the countertop or the grain of cabinets or wood elements (like the floors of this kitchen) will provide warmth and a focal piece in the design.
